Well, in this post, we will be taking a long walk to critically discuss and analyze these three concepts.
Most times, when you receive those SMS from your telecommunications network or your network service provider, most people delete these messages without giving it a second thought. However, there are some few of these messages that do grab your attention in one way or another.
But for the sake of clarity and to prepare your mind, for what this article aims at, lets take a little diversion. You must have received a message from your telecommunications network or your network service provider, informing you of a new offer or services.
In most cases these messages are also used to inform the subscribers of the network of a bonus or reward that they have received, or they may be to also inform the subscribers both old and new about a ‘reward’ that they can benefit from, but there is a clause; you have to pay or subscribe with a fee to benefit or possibly win.
However, this telecommunications network or your network service providers, fail to really distinguish between a promo, a reward, or a raffle draw. They categorize or group all of the aforementioned as ‘promo’.
But before we review or analyze this form of ‘promo’ that is been paraded by telecommunications network or your network service provider let us first acquaint or familiarize with some of these important concepts.

A telecommunications network is a collection of nodes and links that is capable of carrying audio, visual, and data communications. It now include Internet, microwave, and wireless equipment. The main function of any telecommunications network is to provide efficient transmission of information from one point or location to another.
Furthermore, a network service provider (NSP) is a business entity that provides or sells services such as network access and bandwidth by allowing access into its backbone infrastructure or access to its network access points (NAP), which consequently also means access to the Internet.
Network service providers are very similar to or can even be considered the same as Internet service providers (ISPs), but in most cases they are the ones providing backbone services to the ISPs.
In Nigeria there are several telecommunications networks or network service providers some of which include; MTN, GLO, ETISALAT, AIRTEL etc.

What Then Is Promo?
A promo is A shorter form or word for promotion. Thus, it can be used interchangeably. However, in marketing, a promo is the use of any special offer intended to raise a customer’s interest and influence a purchase, and to make a particular product or company stand out among its competitors.
Fundamentally, there are three basic objectives of a promo or promotion. These are:
- To present information to consumers and others.
- To increase demand.
- To differentiate a product.
Any company that can offer its customers some ADDITIONAL BENEFIT on top of their normal purchase in order to better their lives or give them more value can use promotional marketing techniques.
What Is a Reward?
A reward can simply be seen as a thing given in recognition of service, effort, or achievement. A reward program is offered by a person, organization, company or any other body to a person or to customers who frequently make purchases.
Rewards are positive outcomes that are earned as a result of some outstanding and positive contributions that have been made in one form or another. Telecommunications network or network service provider may decide to reward some of their old existing subscribers for staying with them or sometimes may decide to reward both old and new subscribers for choosing the network.
In most cases, rewards are given to motivate customers or subscribers to do more. Hence, it is at no charge or cost to the beneficiary or recipient of the reward.
Ok, finally, we will know what a raffle draw is, then we will go straight to the review.
What is a Raffle Draw
A raffle draw is a form of lottery in which a number of persons buy or pay for one or more chances to win a prize. A raffle is a gambling competition.
A raffle often involves several different possible prizes that can be won, and a ticket will be drawn from the group at random for each of the prizes. In this manner, people are not buying tickets to win a specific prize, but for the possibility of winning any of the prizes.
Now, from the above definitions or explanations, it is clear that there are differences between a promo, a reward and a raffle draw.
In order to effectively figure out which of this category most of the messages sent from any of the telecommunications network or your network service providers in Nigeria belong, let us consider the example below.
You may receive a message from your telecommunications network or your network service provider, informing you that they will be giving out N150 million naira (N150,000,000) in cash prizes to their subscribers in their new promo for the next 30 days. Which is N5 million naira (N5,000,000) everyday. However, there is a clause; for you to be able to participate and stand a chance of winning, you need to send ‘YES’ to a certain number (e.g YES to 54321) and an SMS will cause you N100 naira.
Now lets do some calculations; Lets say that your telecommunications network or network service provider has an estimate of over 40 million (40,000,000) subscribers in Nigeria, and if out of the 40 million subscribers an estimated number of 30,000,000 (30 million) subscribers replied to the message and N100 naira was deducted from.their accounts, it will give you N3,000,000,000 naira (3 billion naira), and don’t forget that your telecommunications network or network service provider will be giving out only N150 million naira out of 3 billion naira their promo text deduction generated for them.
In other words, they (your telecommunications network or network service provider) pays the lucky winners from the 3 billion naira they got from their subscribers the sum of N150 million, and get to keep the remaining proceeds (calculate the earnings yourself). This implies that the telecommunications network or network service provider may probably loss nothing, since they are paying from the money deducted from the same subscribers they want to reward.
What is this called? a promo, a reward or a raffle draw? Some telecommunications networks or network service providers has been in the business of exploiting their loyal subscribers.
From this simple analysis carried out, the whole truth is visible and crystal clear. In this present economy situation, there are still some telecommunications network or network service providers that derive joy in exploiting the masses, all in the name of “PROMO”
As far as telecommunications network or network service providers are concerned, there are high probability that most promos are not really promos, but something entirely different, but disguised in the name of “promo”.
Therefore, you have to be concious of what your actions will be when you get some of those ‘promo’ text from.your telecommunications network or network service provider.
